Introduction to blacksmithing – Coat Rack

$170.00

This three hour hands on class will introduce you to blacksmithing and working with hot iron to make useful objects. You will learn techniques like drawing out, bending, twisting, and more to create a coat rack (or key rack) to take home with you. We will also cover correct hammer technique, and use of anvils, vises, and tongs.

I will show you how to forge unique tulip style hooks from steel. Then we will forge and decorate a bar and then finally use copper rivets to attach the hooks to the bar. First we will shape the steel into the correct form using hammers and then bend it into the correct hook shape. The decoration of the bar is entirely up to you but I will give lots of guidance and show some different ideas. We will use copper rivets to attach the hooks and this will give a lovely clean and fresh look to your own coat rack. The final coat rack is about 12″ long so it can also be used to hang keys, dog leashes, hats, or any number of other items!

We will talk about different designs and techniques and then you can forge any design that you would like!

Class will meet on Tuesday or Thursday at 5.30pm-8.30pm or Saturdays 1.00pm-4.00pm

(Price includes a $30 materials fee)
