Tool making for Blacksmiths

$170.00

This 3 hour workshop will cover the basics of making your own hand tools including chisels and punches. The skills that you learn in this class will let you make any hand tools that you need for your future blacksmithing needs.

Using 4140 tool steel, you will forge a chisel and a round punch. We will discuss the heat treating process to create tools that are tough and hold a sharp edge. We will then heat treat these tools so they are ready for work!

There will also be an opportunity to make other hand tools (such as the bob punch in the photo) and we will talk about using salvaged steel including coil springs and car axles as a source of tool steel. These additional hand tools will be made IF there is the time available.

After making these hand tools, you will use your new tools to forge a key chain or other simple project.

The class is open to students of all skill levels and each class is limited to 6 students. Please note that classes are co-ed unless otherwise indicated.

Expect to leave with your own hand forged tools and the skills to make more on your own.

If you have prior experience this class will help you refresh your skills.

Class will meet on Tuesday or Thursday at 5.30pm-8.30pm or Saturdays 10am – 1pm.

(Price includes a $40 materials fee)
