Copper and Iron Ladle

$170.00

This three hour hands on class will introduce you to blacksmithing and working with hot iron AND copper to make useful objects. You will learn blacksmithing techniques like drawing out, spreading, and bending to create the handle for your ladle.

You will also learn coppersmithing techniques while forming the bowl out of copper. The copper bowl is formed cold using hammers, swage blocks or forming dies, and a flypress. While working with copper, we will need to anneal the copper by heating it to red hot to soften the metal, so we can keep working (and not split or tear the copper).

We will also cover correct hammer technique, and use of anvils, vises, and tongs.

After some cleaning and polishing, you’ll be ready to serve your best homemade soup with a hand forged ladle.

The class is open to students of all skill levels and each class is limited to 6 students. Please note that classes are co-ed unless otherwise indicated.

Expect to leave with basic forging skills and the knowledge needed to forge hot steel. If you have prior experience this class will help you refresh your skills.

This class will meet on a Thursday 5.30pm – 8.30pm

This class will take place in The British Blacksmith forge located at
8477 Pools Brook Road
Kirkville NY 13082

The forge is 20 mins east of Syracuse NY and easy to get to from all locations it is close to I-81 and the New York Thruway I-90.
