Description
Forge your own carbon steel skillet!
Carbon steel skillets are wonderful for cooking and are lighter than cast iron pans. This skillet will give you years of service and is perfect for frying, sautéing, and great for finishing meals in the oven, on the grill, or under the broiler.
This three hour hands on class will introduce you to blacksmithing and working with hot iron. You will learn techniques like drawing out, bending, and using jigs to create a beautiful skillet to take home with you. We will also cover correct hammer technique, and use of anvils, vises, and tongs.
We will start with a pan blank that is pressed by a blacksmith in Alabama and we will forge a perfect handle for the pan. We will start with a piece of flat bar and learn how to taper steel, shape it, and add your own personal touch. We’ll learn how to punch holes in steel so you can hang your skillet in your kitchen.
Once your handle is forged and fitted, you’ll rivet it to the steel pan blank using copper rivets, learning proper rivet-setting technique to create a joint that’s both strong and good-looking. By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with a fully functional, one-of-a-kind cooking skillet — and a solid grounding in hammer control, forging to size, and several fundamental forging techniques.
No experience necessary. All tools, materials, and safety gear provided. Closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing (cotton, wool, or leather) required — no synthetics at the forge.
Class will meet on weekday evenings at 5.30pm-8.30pm or Saturdays 10.00am-1.00pm
The class is open to students of all skill levels and each class is limited to 6 students. Please note that classes are co-ed unless otherwise indicated.
Expect to leave with basic forging skills and the knowledge needed to forge hot steel. If you have prior experience this class will help you refresh your skills.
