Description
In this 4 hour class, you will forge your own BBQ Tongs. This pair of tongs will be equally at home at the grill or at the table and will be an impressive addition to your cooking utensils.
The transformation from a flat bar of steel to a beautiful pair of BBQ tongs will require some precise hammer control and is based on a design by Mark Aspery, one of the best blacksmiths working and teaching in the US. Building on the skills and knowledge you learned in the Introduction to Blacksmithing class, we will introduce several new techniques.
You will learn to isolate material and forge a number of complex shapes and move the metal in several ways. We will introduce top tools and fullers that allow for accurate isolation of material and these methods will involve working with a striker and partner.
Using bottom swages to shape the handles will introduce another tool and will allow students to realize greater possibilities in their forgings.
All of this work will provide students with new methods of working with hot steel and also how to understand how to form complicated shapes from simple materials.
The class will run about 4 hours as there will be a lot to do and learn – so it will be a fun time.
The class is open to students of all skill levels BUT it is recommended that you have some forging skills before taking this class. Some experience would be helpful for this class as there are many steps involved but don’t worry, I’ll be there to help you.
Each class is limited to 6 students and please note that classes are co-ed unless otherwise indicated.
Class will meet on Saturdays or Sundays 10am – 2pm.

The forge is 20 mins east of Syracuse NY and easy to get to from all locations it is close to I-81 and the New York Thruway I-90.
