Description
In this 4 hour class, you will forge your own garden hose holder. This garden hose holder has some traditional design elements including a fish tail scroll and rivets. Building on the skills and knowledge you learned in the Introduction to Blacksmithing class, we will introduce several new techniques.
You will forge a fish-tail on flat stock and then form a scroll, that will stop the hose falling off the holder. We will use a round punch to hot punch the holes for mounting the garden hose holder to your house, shed, or deck!
The top of the garden hose holder includes a decorative element that is forged from flat bar. The flat bar will be heated to a bright orange color and then split using a chisel. Working at the anvil and in a vice, you will split the bar and then clean up the cut using a hot rasp. After the splitting, you will forge the two tines into a decorative ram’s head or a free form scroll. Hot cutting a bar is a great skill to learn and can be used for many other projects
The hose will lay on a flat plate of steel and this plate will be heated int he forge and then shaped. We will use a swage block to form the correct shape and refine it at the anvil.
After forging the hanger and plate steel holder, we will use rivets to connect the pieces together to create a garden hose holder that you’ll be proud of and can hang in your garden.
Of course, you can also use this holder to display anything that fits such as an air compressor hose or your favorite lasso!
The class will run about 4 hours as there will be a lot to do and learn – so it will be a fun time.
The class is open to students of all skill levels BUT it is recommended that you have some forging skills before taking this class. Some experience would be helpful for this class as there are many steps involved but don’t worry, I’ll be there to help you.
