Description
Perfect tongs for using in the kitchen, at the grill, or serving at the table. These hand forged tongs will be a great addition to your cooking tools and will be ready to serve anything from hot dogs, steaks, vegetables, and even donuts!
This three hour hands on class will introduce you to blacksmithing and working with hot iron . You will learn techniques like drawing out, bending, and using mandrels and jigs to create a set of tongs for the BBQ or the kitchen to take home with you. We will also cover correct hammer technique, and use of anvils, vises, and tongs.
We will use round bar to forge a set of handles for the tongs and learn how to taper round bar (the key is to forge it into a square bar first, and then make the taper!). We will use a custom tool called a mandrel to form the handle so that it fits your hands and the tongs are then easy to use.
The tips of the tongs will involve hammering on the nearside of the anvil using half-faced blows to isolate this material. Then another mandrel will be used to form the “boss” of the tongs, the flat part where the rivet will eventually go.
The trick to making tongs, like kitchen tongs, or blacksmiths tongs, is to be able to forge two identical pieces. When you put the two pieces together they will match and you have the perfect tongs. We will use a traditional steel rivet to hold the togs together and then after some cleaning and wire brushing, your tongs will be ready for you to use at the grill or in the kitchen or to serve your favorite meatloaf at the table.
Class will meet on Tuesday or Thursday at 5.30pm-8.30pm or Saturdays 10.00am-1.00pm
The class is open to students of all skill levels and each class is limited to 5 students. Please note that classes are co-ed unless otherwise indicated.
Expect to leave with basic forging skills and the knowledge needed to forge hot steel. If you have prior experience this class will help you refresh your skills.
